just downloaded doctor who s03e02 from the torrent and when i play it in
windows media i get nothing but a green screen. i ould say the file is
defective in some way. this is the first time this has happened. i've
downloaded tv torrent files.

if you had read the other posts in this thread you would have noticed others
commenting on the general quality of the release. it does not take a genius
to surmise that the video is watchable and the problem must come from your
system and not the file posted here so you definately "could not say the file
is defective", so try one of the following:
1. use a program to determine what codec a file uses and whether or not you
have the relevant codec installed, e.g., gspot.
2. try playing with a media player with build it codecs, e.g., vlc player.
3. download a codec pack, e.g., k-lite codec pack

i got the same thing - a green screen. then it went blank and i had to reboot!
i use media player classic, have checked the file with both gspot and
videoinspector, both of which say i have the appropriate codecs (not surprising
as i do use k-lite). any other ideas as to why this won't play for some?

i dont use k-lite codec pack (i just xvid codec, coreavc, powerdvd filters (for
720p/1080i/p .ts), ac3filter, vlc and mpc and i can play anything i need)
but vlc is a good progam for playing divx/xvid. highly recomend vlc for
interlaced material as well seeing as how it can deinterlace it linear to get
59.94fps on truly interlaced sources (irrelevant with all scene .avi content as
ivtc or deinterlaced is a rule)

k-lite probably is the problem. being that it includes almost every version of
almost every codec ever, there's no guarantee that it will actually use the
right one. if you're getting the green screen problem, it usually means your
video card is falling back into vfw mode, or that your drivers are somehow
messed up. to fix the latter either your video card drivers or whatever
codecs/codec pack you're using would need to be removed, then your system
cleaned, then the drivers reinstalled. i would highly recommend you uninstall k-
lite and try cccp (cccp-project.net) - use their insurgent program first to
remove old registry entries and disable obsolete drivers.
@raggedyman, you say you're using mpc - but have you disabled mpc's internal
filters, many of which are outdated? in options, click internal filters and
disable the appropriate ones (or all of them, since you're using a filter pack
and would want those filters to be used rather than the old gabest ones).
anyway. there was a previous commenter who said this the same as "blnt"'s
earlier release, it's not the same file.
