akbar56 - mate, you have a perfectly legitimate reason for using subtitles. my
point was that this guy (and other americans that came out in support of him)
just found english accents 'too hard'. essentially: they weren't american, and
it was 'too hard' to bother. your case is completely different.
another general point: i love certain us programmes, and they are very well
done, but there are some things yanks suck at, and this sort of show is the
perfect example. it seems to me that us attempts at this sort of show are
doomed to failure because - among other things - of reasons alluded to here.
for starters: lom will undoubtedly be stretched to 20-22 episodes for the us
market - and then dragged on for 6-7 seasons if at all possible. i just can't
see that working. kelley will undoubtedly focus far too much on drama rather
than story. i hear that the protagonist is female, so i suspect that we'll have
huge slabs of programming devoted to her love life. great - ally mcstick-figure
does the 70's. i love this show, and would love there to be more of it, but
accept that the current format works, and very well. another case in point may
be the it crowd. why remake it? the uk version is superb, and i can't see how
the us version will be better in any way. clearly budget constraints allowed
only 6 uk eps, and hopefully season 2 will be longer - but will the us version
be us-standard 20 eps? that's just stretching the point way too far.
btw - to the other aussies that have stated their love of pommy accents: come
on guys! as an aussie, i said that i can understand them, but love them? that's
just crossing the line! yorkies anyone? (and where the hell are pauls nixon and
collingwood from?) the best bit about some of these rips
is the atrocious accents of some of the announcers at the end of shows! and i
know that the poms here will undoubtely feel the same about our accent, which
is fair enough (but at least we understand one another!). maybe we need to go
neutral and just all pick on the poor kiwis?!
