akbar56 - mate, you have a perfectly legitimate reason for using subtitles. my
point was that this guy (and other americans that came out in support of him)
just found english accents 'too hard'. essentially: they weren't american, and
it was 'too hard' to bother. your case is completely different.
another general point: i love certain us programmes, and they are very well
done, but there are some things yanks suck at, and this sort of show is the
perfect example. it seems to me that us attempts at this sort of show are
doomed to failure because - among other things - of reasons alluded to here.
for starters: lom will undoubtedly be stretched to 20-22 episodes for the us
market - and then dragged on for 6-7 seasons if at all possible. i just can't
see that working. kelley will undoubtedly focus far too much on drama rather
than story. i hear that the protagonist is female, so i suspect that we'll have
huge slabs of programming devoted to her love life. great - ally mcstick-figure
does the 70's. i love this show, and would love there to be more of it, but
accept that the current format works, and very well. another case in point may
be the it crowd. why remake it? the uk version is superb, and i can't see how
the us version will be better in any way. clearly budget constraints allowed
only 6 uk eps, and hopefully season 2 will be longer - but will the us version
be us-standard 20 eps? that's just stretching the point way too far.
btw - to the other aussies that have stated their love of pommy accents: come
on guys! as an aussie, i said that i can understand them, but love them? that's
just crossing the line! yorkies anyone? (and where the hell are pauls nixon and
collingwood from?) the best bit about some of these rips
is the atrocious accents of some of the announcers at the end of shows! and i
know that the poms here will undoubtely feel the same about our accent, which
is fair enough (but at least we understand one another!). maybe we need to go
neutral and just all pick on the poor kiwis?!

season 2 will be the last season, but they are doing a spin-off with gene hunt
et al. set in 1981. or so i hear.

the spin-off is titled 'ashes to ashes', which is unsurprisingly another david
bowie hit.

the english invented the language

now, what are you talking about? the english language is nothing but a
decendant from several other languages. that's right; it's just a big left
over stew after all the invaders of britain throughout history. american
english is simply one step further in the line of the language'
evolution/change.

oh, and.. "invented"? like a common language is something that's been thought
up and designed? peliz.

and on the subject; so what if an american wanted subtitles? when a person
can't make out an accent, it's not like trying harder will make the
difference. he probably understood the accent decently anyways, but wanted
subtitles for simplicity, so that he could watch the show without focusing
100% to understand it all.

thx for the quick release, great show!

oh, don't be a dickhead metronome. playing semantics doesn't win you any
points. if anything, american english (wow, still called english!) is, if
anything, a de-volution of the language. the rest of the english-speaking world
(we do exist outside of your country, you know) somehow manages to struggle
through and understand you, but you - and people like those to whom i
previously referred - just can't be bothered to make the effort to understand
us. how do you guys think? like this: 'hmm, interesting show, but it doesn't
sound like it was set in my town, so it can't be that good. i know - instead of
making the effort to understand these [fellow english speakers] i'll just
demand to be spoon-fed'. people like you have caused the dumbing down of the
language, and western culture on the whole. lazy. then again, perhaps you
really do believe that 'please' is spelled 'peliz'.
how very american. guess what? if 'he' understood the accent, a little time and
effort would have rendered subtitles pointless. of course trying harder makes a
difference. it's part of learning. maybe then he - perhaps even you - would
learn that there is more to the world than just the us.

i find that funny that some one would want subtitles for the purpose of english
language barrier but some people do like captions i dunno. some times you all
most need it when you watch some irish movies though they have a thick gaelic
accent thats hard to understand. and no im not american i am an
irish-candian/swiss(german) living in canada, try learning all the swiss accents
now then you have a problem.

any ways this show is awesome but i dont understand why americans allways wana
make there own versions like the office and now the it crowd plus more... and
they official claim to be spinoffs[ripoffs] of the british shows. i dunno any
one else think its just a waste and lack of originality.

could someone point me to a torrent for the first season? the only ones i found
have avi's mixed with mpg's. thanks a bunch.

fyi i'd like to bring attention to the fact that the bbc only has _full_
musical rights in the uk (at least that was the case for s1), and they cut down
versions for other territories to get around that problem, so if you think
"i'll just catch this when it airs" and you live outside the uk, you've been
warned.

just too let you know sid that the it crowd season 2 will be longer than 6
episodes! and also collingwoods accent is from lancashire, unsurprisingly
that\'s right next to yorkshire.

thanks for that info true heretic. i'm looking forward to it. also: to the
person who wrote about the music rights, thanks for that. i'm glad that i d/l'd
the uk version - surprisingly, the abc has yet to air lom here (i'm pretty sure
that it will, but without the soundtrack... almost a case of why bother?

it doesnt matter how big the budget for a remake is because the americans wont
film outside and everything will be done in fake three wall settings and on one
private road.life on mars, top gear and decent news make my tv license worth
