it's a superb show - regardless of it's origin. the first season is still out
there - do yourself a favour and track it down. frankly, i feel that the
english do this much better than the americans, who don't seem to understand
subtlety. i'm not looking forward to the us version of this (and won't be
watching). us remakes almost always just simplify and cheapen the concepts. us
producers have bigger budgets, not necessarily better product - flashier
doesn't always mean better.
i recall someone here asking for subtitles for torchwood, because english
wasn't their first language - which was fine - then an american doing the same
because british accents were too hard to understand. aside from a lack of
geography (the accents in torchwood were mainly welsh), this demonstrated a
lack of manners - the english invented the language, make the effort to follow
their accents. i find most english accents easier to follow - or generally much
more pleasant - than some us accents. boston, anyone?
and no, i'm not english - just a little more open-minded.
i know nothing of the situation you speak of but i am an american and sometimes
i need subtitles for english accents. i have a hearing problem that i don't
hear low frequencies very well. there are some english accents that i just plain
can't understand because of the way the tones and inflections dip into those low
ranges.
i definitely agree about the accents; although, of course a hearing problem would
be a justification for needing subtitles.
i\'m also dreading the american remake, it can\'t possible be as good, not only
subtleties, but also stretching out the story make it fit over 100+ episodes
will just wreck it, even american shows suffer because of that.
i agree that the this is a brilliant show. i personally am a big fan of the
shows of the bbc. i agree that even though the budgets are not as big as the
american shows, the uk shows are far superior. they very simply make you think
more than the american shows and that is what makes them so much more enjoyable.
someone mentioned that they wouldn't watch the american version, i didn't even
realize they were making an american version. i would still watch an american
version out of curiousity and to see if they attempt to get more than 2 seasons
out of it. and yes i am an american.
its not bad enough that they are making an american version of it.
what is totally terrible is that david e kelly is producing it.
don't get me wrong, i like some of his work. i just don't see his style gelling
with how awesome the concept of lom is. besides, having a limited run like the
bbc is doing is the smart way to tell the story. an american market would make
it go longer.
what?? episode 2 already aired? i forgot the uk do that strange 'well this
channel gets the show a week early'. bbc3 was notorious for doing this.
in regard to what alot of you have been saying: yes, the british really do know
how to pull off great dramas. they always have, and i think we track it back
to alot of earlier british literature. they know how to tell a story and how
to cover all their bases. in the case of life on mars, we have an excellent
creator and great actors.
i also find the british accent irresistable, and it's no wonder my girl of 4
years is a full on pom. apparently they find something sexy about us aussies
so it works out well 🙂
edit: don't worry akbar. kelly has done a great job of boston legal, and after
seeing the office translate in the us despite my wildest doubts, he may be able
to pull it off. it'll just be a matter of 'wait and see' i suppose.
