"kid nation is a reality series in which 40 kids have 40 days to build a new
world from a ghost town that died out during the 19th century. in bonanza city,
new mexico, these 40 children, ages 8-15, will live for 40 days without their
parents or modern technology in an attempt to build a city like generations
before them -- by hand. while there, the children will have to cook, clean,
haul water, and even run businesses. a government will be constructed that
elects four kid leaders who will pass laws for their kid nation. during their
time away, they'll learn how to cope with typical childhood emotions --
homesickness, pure pressure, etc. -- as well as those facing a new town.

at the end of each episode, the town of 40 will gather for a town meeting where
they will debate the important issues facing bonanza city as they build the
town. in doing so, these kids will show strength and wisdom beyond their years
and humor and insight that only children can display. "

show itself wasn't as horrific as i've come to expect from reality tv, but there
are a few things i really could have done without. the music was incredibly
overdone and manipulative, like it was dictating cliff's notes for what emotions
should be elicited by the show. the challenges are pretty bog-standard, but at
least more team-based than usual. and while the rest is far from believable,
sophie's monologue/phone call at the end was incredibly fake, and coupled with
the as always over-the-top cheesy music, i had to restrain myself from just
losing it and laughing my head off. the $20k 'hard worker' reward is an
interesting twist, but we'll see how motivated these kids are...25% will get
that 20 grand (40 days, council every four days so 10 councils, and 40 kids,
assuming you can't win again), but quite a few will shrink back and never even
be in the running. i'd love to see this turn into lord of the flies, but it's so
overproduced it'll probably continue on being the mushy bland oatmealy drivel
that is 'reality' tv, with too little genuinely interesting going on to make it
worth slogging through.

the sad thing about this show is that the kids are being forced to be
competitive rather than work together as a team from the very beginning of this
show. instead of giving them a chance to form their own rules and the likes,
they are divided into four groups that even challenge each other every now and
then...

and then there is the money part... *rolls eyes* the potential is just drowned
by cheesyness and common adult laws.

same way as any other reality show like survivor, big brother etch.

the only real reality shows out there are shows like cops...

seems to me that the money aspect of it would have been a lot better if they
gave badges to the most worthy kid each episode and then, at the end, called all
the kids with badges up to give them their reward.

that way nobody would know they were playing for (or giving away) $20k every
town meeting.

yes, grab this show. this ep is packed with all the "run fast" action sadly
lacking in many other shows.
