man there is no way you can compare the dune movie to that hitchhikers travesty. just no fucking
way at all!! not even in the same league. it was one of david lynch's best, imo.

so the dune series fanboys might have been upset, but they were probably some ridiculously uptight
nerds to begin with. im pretty laid back and all that, but really that hg movie was so fucking bad
it was not even a good b movie. and they murdered the source material, just took a big shit all
over it.

you know, i didnt go home and cry about it or write a bunch of angry letters to people. i just
thought to myself "wow what a peice of shit".

its probably going to get redone at some point, the book is a timeless classic.

@chatulusaves

if you read the books then you woud realize that you actually wrote a fairly acurate description of dirk
gentley as d.a. wrote him. also re: his loving the film adaptation of hhgttg... he died in 2001 the
movie came out in 2005 hmmmm....

@anomies:

there are two adaptions: 1981 miniseries http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081874/ which da loved, it
shares some actors with the radio adaptions (or actually: the radioplays da wrote, which he then
adapted to a book, same with gently, iirc)

and 2005 movie http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0371724/ which da didn't know about on account of being
dead.

a quick note about the source material being "shit all over"... douglas adams wrote most of the
screenplay that was used for the h2g2 movie, and he explains in the intro to "the ultimate
hitchhiker's guide":

"the guide has appeared in so many forms - books, radio, a televidion series, records and soon to be
a major motion picture - each time with a different story line that even its most acute followers
have become baffled at times."

none of the version of the story follow each other as normal adaptations might. give the intro a
read if anyone's interested in a bit of explanation as to how the show was a rearranged version of
the radio show (chronologically switched events for example).

i'll give this dirk gently a watch just cause i can. i might hate it, i might not. if it has adams'
style of humor, i'm sure i'll like it.

and from another post, the description (of dirk gently) "...the main character to be somewhat of a
loathesome jerk half the time, always looking for a self-serving angle and willing to screw others
over for a payday" sounds spot on.

re: dune, i wasn't comparing the two. how you got that from what i wrote is mystifying. what i was noting was the similar
circumstances of having a film that many fans complained about (eg. "you got it wrong!") and the actual authors saying,
"they got it right!" and yes, i'm perfectly aware the da assumed room temperature prior to the film being completed. he
did, however (as noted in someone else's post) write part of the screenplay, and much of the tweeks, changes, and new
material was entirely his invention, created for the express purpose of being used in the film (which they did). so yeah, he
was dead, but the movie was still what he wanted/envisioned. i simply think he'd gone insane by that stage of his existence.

one thing that's applicable here, but that even many die-hard hitchhikers don't know, is that da changed the story with
each repackaging. what i mean is, if you were to compare the hhgg novel to, say, the omnibus edition (and several other
published variations over the years) you'd find that they're subtly different. he intentionally made changes for each of them,
just to mess with people's heads. personally i think it was a brilliant and inspired joke, and applaud the ingenuity, but when
it came to the movie, i think he took it too far. the joke turned into a revamp, and i barely recognized anything.

anywho, good to know i can at least still peg a protagonist's character/moral fiber, as regards dirk gently, even if i don't
like it. now that i know he's *supposed* to be that way, i'm kind of glad i never read the books. i run into too many people
like that in real life. 🙂

i agree with you, but probably not in the way you intended. i'll admit my viewing of lynch's films is fairly
limited since i'm not really in the "right" age group (i've seen eraserhead, dune, lost highway, mulholland
drive, and some shorts), but i just don't see what appeals to people about any of them. i wasn't
excessively fond of the dune novels (although one of them, which i can never recall the title... heretics or
messiah, is still a favorite) but i thought the film was pretty awful, at least when taken as an entry into the
science fiction genre. i had no problems however feeling the influence of adams on the h2g2 movie, and
didn't find it that bad. the effects were missing something, and the rendition of the story was a little vague,
but i didn't really get the sense that it was re-written (or in today's lingo, re-imagined) once the author was
too dead to stop it. herbert wasn't dead, mind you, but he was obviously either very diplomatic, hoping for
higher box office returns, or very poor at conveying in writing what he imagines, if he did say lynch's
rendition was "it".

just my opinion though. looking up lynch has given me an interest in seeing the straight story, for some
reason. hopefully i'll like it!

with regard to herbert and lynch's dune, i'm not aware of him ever saying that the film is how he
imagined things; what i have heard him comment on was that he was fully aware of the differences in
film and prose, how they require different interpretations and presentations. whilst the only god-like
ability of paul mau'dib was a statisical prediction of likely future events that bordered on omniscience,
on film that would have just not worked so he truly became a god-like being able to influence the world
around him.

about the show
======================================================

dirk gently is a british comedy detective drama tv series based on characters from the dirk gently
novels by douglas adams. the series was created by howard overman and stars stephen mangan as
holistic detective dirk gently and darren boyd as his business partner and sidekick richard macduff.
recurring actors include helen baxendale as macduff's girlfriend susan harmison, jason watkins as di
gilks and lisa jackson as dirk's receptionist janice pearce. unlike most detective series dirk gently
features broadly comic touches and even some minor science fiction themes such as time travel and
humanoid robots.

dirk gently operates his holistic detective agency based on the "fundamental interconnectedness of all
things" (see holism). often relying on random chance methods such as zen navigation, dirk discovers
connections between seemingly-unrelated cases. he claims that he follows the principles of quantum
mechanics but it is implied that he doesn't really understand them. although most people suspect he is
just a cheap conman he often produces surprising results.

an original television soundtrack album featuring music from the series composed by daniel pemberton
was released by 1812 recordings on 5 march 2012.

s01e00 -- dec. 16, 2010 -- pilot -- http://eztv.it/ep/24948/dirk-gently-hdtv-xvid-fov/
dirk gently, holistic detective, takes on the case of a missing cat and soon finds himself in a web of
intrigue involving a missing ceo, a disappearing husband, and a recursive time loop.

s01e01 -- march 05, 2012 -- episode 1
dirk discovers a connection between two unrelated cases. the first involves a client who thinks that the
pentagon are attempting to kill him and the second involves a person whose horoscopes appear to be
coming true.

s01e02 -- march 12, 2012 -- episode 2
dirk and macduff return to cambridge, to the university that dirk was thrown out from for cheating
twenty years ago. they have been hired by dirk's former professor as security consultants to guard a
valuable robot. after the robot is stolen and the professor is discovered dead, dirk and macduff are
soon implicated as the chief suspects.

s01e03 -- march 19, 2012 -- episode 3
the police need to talk to dirk urgently as a few of his clients have been murdered and dirk is the only
link in the investigation. dirk decides to flee the country after he is convinced that he is being framed.
his plans are interrupted by the arrival of a pretty woman though who has been terrorised by a stalker.
macduff is surprised after dirk decides to take the case, but his surprise turns to disbelief after dirk
reveals that it's him who's been doing the stalking. after the police finally manage to catch up with dirk
at his messy flat they just want to protect him from the professional killer.
