i'll watch with trepidation, hoping it does honor to the books by douglas adams. according to what
i've heard, it's fairly loosely based on the books, but that still leaves plenty of room for
quality. well, we'll all know soon enough!

in case you're wondering what this is about:
drama featuring writer douglas adams's holistic detective dirk gently, who operates based on the
fundamental interconnectedness of all things. an investigation into a missing cat is inextricably linked to
a chance encounter with an old friend, an exploding warehouse, a missing billionaire and a plate of
biscuits.

i've been waiting for a production of this to make it to screen for years. fingers crossed it's up to
scratch!

i'm a little confused. is this the same one that was posted three weeks ago? i've seen nothing about it going to series or
any new eps.

yeah, this is what aired and was posted three weeks back -- but it wasn't posted *here*. seems a lot of
the usual scene tv sites failed to notice this one when it hit.

excellent! i needed a cheering up after coming home from holidays to an empty house and a car that
had accumulated 1.5 inches of water inside it due to a dodgy window... ๐Ÿ˜›

if anyone wants to pass comment, or read steve mangan's view on the adaptation of much loved
books, go here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/tv/2010/12/douglas-adams-dirk-gently-stephen-mangan.shtml

there's a couple of comments by me under my yenrug nick.

massive liberties were taken with the story but it was still very enjoyable. after all, it was an hour long
pilot/proof-of-concept. hopefully bbc commissions the series and they get both the budget and
timeframe to allow them to properly go back and flesh out the books.

never read the book but have a mate who has and i'm not sure lol, but i still think it was good.

off beat, unsure, and quirky.. loved it really.

but for those who have read the book i dunno, faithful reproductions can sometimes be required..

i know if it was hhgttg and it was off (like the movie ugh) i'd have issues..

i see the bbc loves quirky things like this, but won't expect it to last forever.. 6 episodes if it
is a show at most.

i thought it was just a tv movie tbh.

i love the bbc for producing stuff like ths, and i love eztv for putting it online here so us
non-brits can enjoy it as well!

not as good as the book, but they did reproduce some unique and bookish moments really well and like
always around dirk gently: hilarity ensued. also considering that the story is set in our time and
not in the time that the book was written, they did do an ok job with it.

i cant really think of any tv or movie adaptations that are better than the books they are based on.

with that said, this show was really, really excellent... surprisingly so, imo. considering the
glut of dr. who plots and characters over the years, it was quite refreshing to see that bbc did not
lapse into any sort of copy/paste production values with this, which is arguably similar in concept.
frankly i enjoyed it quite a bit more than any of the dr. who eps ive seen since they returned in
this modern era.

im actually still waiting for a somewhat proper adaptation of hitchhikers guide. the old series is
close, but poorness of the special fx was distracting. they could really knock it out of the park
at this point. btw the movie that came out a few years ago sucked balls.

i'm a huge da fan, but never got around to reading the dg books, so can't comment as to whether the filmed version was
loyal to the book or not. viewing it on its own, i wasn't overly thrilled, to be honest. it was alright, but i found the main
character to be somewhat of a loathesome jerk half the time, always looking for a self-serving angle and willing to screw
others over for a payday. it was very difficult to like the character and story with those traits present and making the lead
so unlikable. still, all that could easily change if it goes to series, and with so little scifi/fantasy (if one could really lump it in
with that batch) on the air i'd welcome it getting picked up.

@rajajuju

i completely agree about the hitchhiker's movie. thought it was just awful. and with da's enthusiasm for it (he was so
proud of it and approved of all those things we hated), i can't help but be reminded of 1984's dune, and frank herbert's
similar enthusiasm that flew in the face of all the fans that hated it. according to frank, dune was just about perfect,
although he acknowledged that the story was, by necessity, truncated and modified to fit into a small window of time, so
that part wasn't ideal. all those die-hard fans pointing out all sorts of errors and mistakes, and herbert was saying, "nope,
all those things were exactly how i envisioned them when i wrote it." (fortunately for me i wasn't a fan of the books, and
absolutely loved the movie, so i find his responses hilarious, not offensive.)
