This is the story of Jonathan Ames, a struggling writer who drinks too much, smokes too much marijuana, and has recently been dumped by his girlfriend. Being a fan of detective novels, Jonathan has the brilliant idea to advertise himself as a detective and take on cases, or in some instances, make them worse. Helping him with both his life and his detective adventures are two good friends, each with his own life problems to solve.
