i hope it plays out better than this plot synopsis sounds... i was all kinda
excited before reading this... methinks it would have been stronger to keep a
totally separate story from the main bsg series... ie no adamas... it's just
going to come off as weak and contrived if they go tying the two together at
this late point... let's hope they don't drag any plot threads into season 4...

shouldn't we have heard about bill's robot sibling by now? i was thinking that
maybe his dad would turn out to have been involved in a human-rights-for-ais
case that'd inform the cylons' eventual rebellion, or something. but building
one in his garage? uh.

this is the bad side of making everything about family: it risks becoming too
specific and literal. also a risk of making prequels, come to think of it.

on the other hand, i was pretty sure that a tv show spun off of the terminator
would suck, and i'm so pleased to have been wrong about that.

i have two points right now although i haven't really thought a lot about it.
---
1. i agree with what a lot of people are saying in that they should not be
focusing on ancestors of people that we already know. it will just create too
many inconsistencies when re-watching bsg (and i plan to re-watch them about
every 4-5 years or so!).

2. does anyone else feel like the show will be a little bit hollow? we all know
that caprica and the colonies were eventually destroyed. i think a part of what
makes shows like these work is that, no matter how bad things get, there is
always the hope of a brighter day. it's the same deal with star wars 4,5,6 vs
1,2,3; part of what made star wars so special originally was the fact that we
came straight into the rebel forces in the middle of a seemingly unwinnable war
and winning against all odds. knowing that anakin would become vader and help to
usher in an era of imperial dicatatoship kind of screwed up the whole vibe.

does anyone else find this wholly unbelievable and just not the kind of
creativity that we normally get from moore? this is the opening scrawl from the
tv miniseries which is rumored to be written by moore and unchanged during the
editing process:

the cylons were created by man.
they were created to make life easier on the twelve colonies.
and then the day came when the cylons decided to kill their masters.
after a long and bloody struggle, an armistice was declared.
the cylons left for another world to call their own.
a remote space station was built...
...where cylon and human could meet and maintain diplomatic relations.
every year, the colonials send an officer.
the cylons send no one.
no one has seen or heard from the cylons in over forty years.

so, bill adama is at least 50+, lee is 25+, he's 9-yrs old when the first
"cylons" were built, and there was also a war he fought in, had time to father
lee, and time for 40+ years of no one hearing from the cylons??

ok, so for all this to fit together, lee had to have been fathered during the
"peace" of 40 years or more after the war ... and this long and bloody war
couldn't have actually been that long, otherwise bill would actually be much
older than he appears.

so here's what i think ... this story was leaked to get us up in arms against
the very very stupid idea ... and grow hype for the current series. if they're
going to do a "how the cylon war started" show ... you can't really do a series
where week one, somebody dies, week two, a guy builds a robot copy to fill his
loneliness, and week three, the new robot and the millions of others that
spawned out of nothingness turn against humanity ...

it just doesn't work ...

to be semi-believable, the cylons would have to have been enslaved for much
longer, possibly even multiple generations. it would make much more sense to do
a tv series about the beginning of the first cylon war, but make the cylons the
heroes. i'd sure watch a show where the heroes are a formerly enslaved race
fighting for their freedom. sounds a lot like season 3 to me ... 🙂
