uh oh! yet another version of the same stargate episode for the
likes of traumadoc and friends to get confused over 😉
nah, ignoring the 1100mb files is easy enough. it's just when there are
multiple 350mb versions that i have to double check, still wondering if they
might be numbered wrong or anything.
it is actually a bit confusing with all the different versions of an episode
spread out over an extended timespan. i've got fast pipes, so it doesn't really
matter when i download the same episode 2-3 times (it's faster to download and
watch than to figure out if i've already seen it). it is a bit disappointing
though to realize that i've already seen this episode (twice, and while it's
quite good, thrice will have to wait ;-)
it should be a simple matter to provide more information in the listings though.
if i were to program it, i would e.g. add links to different versions as they
become available:
the issue with your suggestion, is you'd have to constantly go back to something
which could be a week ago (in the case of stargate) or even months ago (in the
case of things like eureka) to see whether there is a newer/better version.
i personally don't see the issue.
if you're downloading the 'dsr' versions, then only download the dsr versions. i
don't get how looking for 3 letters is difficult ?!
if you're like me and can't stand the quality of dsr's, then ignore them and
only download the hdtv or 720p versions. again - pretty easy.
i just can't comprehend the issue here when it really is just looking for 3 to 4
letters/numbers.
oh, i don't bother with matching up letters. whatever is the best quality at the
time i'm looking is good enough (sacrilegious, i know, but it's only tv ;-). i
understand that if you're not interested in a show until you see a certain
quality, there would never be any confusion -- that isn't my situation though,
but maybe i'm unique. for a few shows i'll download a high-quality version (on
purpose) after i've watched an earlier lower quality version, but only for a few.
my suggestion wasn't to only list the show once, and then fill in links as they
became available -- as you point out, that would be tedious to keep track of.
rather, once the second release was published, it would come on the main page as
usual, but also contain links to the previous release. it would be an added
bonus if the second release was reflected on the publication of the first
release also.
so, nothing too radical, but you'd be able to tell by a glance on the front page
which versions were available for an episode.
i certainly did for quite some time, for both of them, although i do know about
them now (it might be more accessible if you added title attributes to the tags?).
regarding the question about missing something: well, yes, you're overlooking
the the "tv-mindset" factor (it sounds better than laziness ;-). of the seven
shows that arrived since i was last here, i'm interested in watching five (which
are downloading as i type). one of them, i'm 100% confident i haven't seen
before (mythbusters air plane hour -- i've never seen them blow up air planes
before, w00t! [*]). the other four, i'm really not sure. i could find out, but
by the time i've finished reading /. mb will be down, and by the time i've
watched it, the rest should be ready. i'm barely out of bed and it will take
another hour or so before i'm caffeinated enough to be an intelligent netourist.
i know, life is hard, and none of this is your problem :-) i've offered to help
with the implementation though, so i don't feel like a complete luser..
you know...the 700mb high-res xvid's that look so great on my tv since the
xbox360 can't decode .mkv files.
they used to be very popular but now it's all about the 720p versions for some
reason. sure they look great but it's still a relatively obscure codec outside
the scene.
from what i've read on the wikipedia and such, .mp4 files, which is what the
xbox 360 and ipods etc support, cannot contain dolby digital or dts sound
streams. this obviously limits their usefulness.
.mkv files on the other hand are open source, free, and can carry these high
quality multi-channel sound formats as well as the high quality video. these are
just a few reasons why .mkv is used by the scene.
