"last night's show presented evidence that then president eisenhower knew of the
soviet union's ability to launch a satellite months before that day in october
1957 when the soviets were first in space!
additionally the episode showed that of the two groups in the usa that could
possibly launch a satellite into orbit, the group that wasn't 'military' was
given the go-ahead to do so for political reasons.
we all know what happened there. the vanguard launch exploded on the launch pad
after rising a few feet into the air.
however the explorer group, a joint venture between von braun's german/american
scientists in alabama and jpl in california were covertly running a satellite
launching capacity on their own.
after vanguard's explosion, the explorer group were given their shot and a few
months after sputnik, an american satellite was launched!
however we are informed that explorer's group had launched a rocket a year
earlier than sputnik that reached the necessary velocity with a blank payload
instead of a satellite. the usa could have been first! what eisenhower did was
not revealed until the documents were recently 'declassified'!
great show last night!"
looks interesting, might que it up for later.
