outside of the uncharacteristic and quite absurd actions that landry/tyra took
at the end, the show looks to be just as high quality as last year. i just wish
it weren't on friday. shows usually don't last long when they're moved to fridays.
i got the feeling this was moved to fridays because of how many (idiots)
people said they kept looking for it on a friday. as it is this season, you
can choose to go support the local high school team, or stay home and watch
friday night lights.
is the aspect ratio way off in this one or am i seeing things? everyone's heads
seem a tad too long. they look right to me only at a forced aspect ratio of 2.00:1
was the broadcast in this weird aspect ratio or what?
i can already hear the death rattle.... the theme of the past has been friday
night cancellations.. which is unfortunate because this is a damn good show.
i read the other comments here and watched the first 3 episodes from season 1.
here's my take.
first of all, the shaky camera style is trashing the show. the director must
have been raised on ritalin and alcohol. there's another popular sci-fi show
that does this a lot (for the same reason) and it's the quickest way for someone
to get add and need drugs to stabilize their brain after watching an hour of the
constant camera shaking for no reason whatsoever.
doing this for a football game is fine, but when the camera is shaking when
people are sitting at a table and talking is just stupid. everyone overdid this
style in the 90's already.
there are some sequences and scenes that are really good. not only that but a
few moments it even approaches the quality of realistic tv drama like the one on
the wire for example, and it succeeds - some times.
other times it gets too preachy and predictable and becomes just a teen soap
opera with high school boozers and ignorant people who seem to live a lifetime
of caring nothing about the world other than their church and their bar. we know
people are like that in small towns in texas but the show glorifies it and makes
the characters too simplistic and too one dimensional.
the football matches are too hurried and too formulaic. they don't have to have
a constant background of irrelevant music. hs football can be intense on its
own, we don't need to hear so much noise to keep up our interest.
so, in general it's above average, it can get pretty good some times, but if
they would stop that damn shaking camera watching it would be much more enjoyable.
