can somebody explain what it means if a file is nuked please?

it means there's something wrong with it.
a video file, for example, could be nuked for being out of sync.

or it in some way breaks the scene rules

good nukes are when the file is out of sync, or there's bits missing and so on, this will then lead to either a
proper or a repack, which are the same thing essentially, a proper is a release by another group, and a
repack is if the original group has replaced the nuked file with another, better version.

bad nukes are done mostly so another group can release their rip and claim the glory as it were, and this
is an increasing trend (or it seems to be increasing anyway). they usually end up claiming something silly
like files being oversized even when they're only over by a few meg. last time i remember that was on
veronica mars, there were 2 propers released, and the real-proper was nuked for being oversized, it was
353mb or something similar.

best thing to do is to check the comments and see if anyone says what the nuke is about, if you think it'll
bother you then use the proper/repack

i understand you guys thinking it is dumb, but it is a real pita when i want
to fit a season onto a dvd and it is over by a few megs because of releases
that are just a little too large... so i am greatful for those nukes!

shouldn't have any affect whatsoever on fitting a season to a dvd. with the
350mb standard, you can't fit 13 eps to a dvd. and if it's a standard 24 ep
season, 12 eps to a dvd, you end up with plenty of empty space after burning off
12 (over 100mb).

now if they'd implement the suggested new scene rules, which were designed to
fit 13 eps to a dvd, then it would be an issue. current scene rules are
designed to fit to cds, slightly oversized files have no impact on dvd burning.

damn... i had to step out for a moment in the middle of writing and abennett got
his comment in before me.. don't you hate when that happens?

dvd burning is not affected by slightly oversized files in the least bit.. it
only applies to cd's.. not dvd's.... dvd's should have well over 100mb spare to
play with..
so are you sure you know what you're doing, louse?

i like to use that extra space on the dvd to throw disc and case cover images in
there, in case i wanna print up some labels.. or any extra little images and
things having to do with that season..

it is handy when you get a run of eps under 350mb though and you can get an
entire 13 ep series on one dvd... only happened once or twice but it's handy not
having that 1 stray ep left over ☹️

also, a lot of shows only have 22 episode seasons so only need to get 11 per dvd
if you're seperating seasons. or if you just pack as much as possible and
continue the next season on the same disk none of it matters 🙂

yea thats a swine, i've had to edit files down before now, cutting out the intro music etc, so as to make it
fit on a dvd, not fun, but that was kind of the point, they nuke at 353mb, but its redundant as in the one
case you have 2 discs of 11 eps, so its a non issue, and in the other an un-nuked 350mb rip would be too
big to fit a 13ep series on to a dvd

but the suggested revision to the scene rules would make it so that, that happened every time, and with
an actual point to a size nuke then it would be a whole different thing. it would actually be worthwhile to
nuke for oversizing then (only really on 13ep orders but still...), as it would make an actual difference to
the 'end user' as it were, but as has been mentioned in other threads, those in the scene have a certain...
disdain for the end users

i try and find as much added value stuff as i can to bulk out an 11 or 12 ep dvd, mp3 interviews,
webisodes, pictures that kinda thing, the space is there after all
