jupiter: the giant planet

man i hope they're going to in-depth this time, instead of telling us everything
we already know.

i wouldn't get your hopes up too much, so far this series seems to be pretty
fluffy-light. still, in all honesty i don't think that's a *bad* thing, as the
presentation makes it very approachable to people not that 'into' ... well, into
anything that doesn't involve american idol, etc. and science in general
definitely needs to start bringing more folks around before the entire next
generation is lost to a mind-numbing haze of myspace, youtube, weblog (ok i made
that one up but you get the point), etc.

there are some good mp3 lectures available from uc berkely on their webcasts
site if you're interested in a more indepth look at some of the fields touched
on in these shows. just do a google search for 'uc berkeley webcasts'. they're
worth looking at too, and cover a wide range of subjects.

cheers.

rereading my post i think it could be misconstrued as saying i dislike this
show; that's definitely not the case, i quite enjoy it and will continue to
watch it, i was just saying it's not going to be a suitable resource for a more
in depth scientific look at the topics covered.

still, having watched it, i think even only a few bbc horizon episodes can be a
lot more informative than a couple of seasons of this show. i'm not a big fan of
dumbing things all the way down - sure, it may reach a larger audience (though
not really, boring as this show is), but it also treats all its viewers like
not-so-bright 8 year olds - which is too big a problem for me to overcome. oh
well, i can always *not* watch it, which i think i definately will from now on.

i had big hopes for this series but it seems to be getting worse and worse.
the graphics are crap. there is vertually no info there. i was really annoyed
about last nights jupiter episode, they said that for years the radio siginals
were a huge mystery but now we know why they are there and have done since
voyager in 1979. and that nothing. they didn't elaberate at all! i thought for a
minute there was a chunk of the show missing!
the first episode about the sun was cool but i should have known it was gunna be
gunk after last weeks episode which was all shit graphics and shock rubbish.
didn't even deserve a whole show imo.
i don't think i'll be getting anymore of these.

i remember that the bbc did a show a few years back. it was good as far as i
recall, even tho i never caught all of the series. it followed a group of
astronauts on their journey through the solar system. i have no idea what the
series was called now. but it was a lot more informative than this show. my
initial thought of this show were "cool, seems interesting!" but now its gone to
"hmmm, i'll have a look, there aint much else on".

i'll still watch it but not pay any real attention to it. it just runs in the
backround. and if something catches my attention i'll watch for a bit.

that said, im sure it is helping people who have never even thought about space
in any real terms.
