vlc is actually not a good choice for a player in this case. it needs a good
processor and no spdif
best way is coreavc codec (download it from torrent sites) because its the
lightest and most efficient resource wise. also download the ac3filter from
free-codecs.com if you don't have it and also get media player class while you
are there. after installing coreavc, to get mpc to use coreavc follow these
instructions
h**p://img116.imageshack.us/img116/4054/howtosetupcoreavcel3.jpg
h**p://img70.imageshack.us/img70/2459/howtosetupcoreavc2jw8.jpg
or if you have 2.0 audio then just download this modded version of tcpmp.
someone built coreavc into it
h**p://www.mytempdir.com/1245340
with an older computer of mine that i use for media (1.8gb amd xp athalon 2200+,
512mb ddr ram, 128mb ati radeon pro 9000 video card) nothing could play the
1.07gb x264 files except for mpc with coreavc and tcpmp
for most people it is probably enough to install the coreavc codec and a
matroska splitter (h++p://switch.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/guliverkli/
matroskasplitter_20050310.7z). works for me with bsplayer.
annother very good choice for playing h.264 without any need to demux,
transcode, treat the files in any way before playback is the free software
mplayer project.
(www.mplayerhq.hu ; daily snapshots: svn://svn.mplayerhq.hu/mplayer/trunk)
although coreavc might be faster in some configurations, with mplayer you can
tune up your playback, e.g. using "-lavdoptions skiploopfilter=all" to playback
even on rather slow machines without that much quality loss.
and, of course you have the by far biggest choice of supported input formats
and output devices (e.g. you can use your dxr3 hardware-based mpeg decoder
card). no need to worry if you can play any format any more - mplayer supports
almost everything.
