this is such a far cry from how we used to get new doctor who episodes here in
the states. we used to have to wait for a pal tape to get shipped to someone
here in the us who had a pal television and vcr. that person would then set up
an ntsc video camera in front of the pal television and play back the episode,
using the camera to make a copy viewable on equipment in the us but not without
its drawbacks - the different frame rates caused a noticible flicker in the
image and it was almost impossible to get the colors right, although they got to
a point where they weren't off too horribly after years of tweaking. and this
was what we had to live with until the episodes made it to pbs over here. this
went on a lot from around tom baker's last series through the end of the
sylvester mcccoy run. it was also the only way we got to see blake's 7 or
sapphire & steel in the us. b7 eventually made it to some pbs stations over
here but we've never gotten sapphire & steel. i was pleasantly shocked when i
saw that s&s got a dvd release over here but b7 didn't! btw - i'm looking for
someone to trade for the series 2, 3 & 4 blake's 7 dvd sets so if you can get
them and want to trade for some us dvd sets or something else, please drop me a pm.
and now i get to sit down and watch a perfect copy of doctor who the same night
it aired on the bbc. god, i love the internet.

are you serious about the whole ntsc cam recording a pal tv?
even then there should of been 2 simple options...
slow it back down to 24fps and 3:2 telecine it.
or just telecine the 25fps to 30fps (50 field to 60 fields. i've seen them do
that on bbca. not to mention thats exactly what your computer/divx player is
doing when you play these on your ntsc tv)

you idiot. the frame size would have to be resized as well, or the aspect
ration would be out.
p.s. by the way, "even then" was 1975. i tried reverse telecine on mums
wedding video tapes but mum killed me for cutting the tape up into thousands of
bits and getting them all mixed up.

even in 1975 the studios still should of had a little better way of doing it
then putting a ntsc cam up to a pal tv.
wouldn't that also have horrible dimensioning effects?
if 24fps movies could be sped up to pal back then, then pal could of been slowed
down to ntsc 24fps

lol @ that... studios ? are you assuming that the average joe in the us in
1975 had a studio to run to ?
lmao...
how about the average joe who can now get torrents, back in 1975 had to have
mates send them videos in a non-compliant format, and one of them had convert it
to a compliant format so as to make copies for their mates...
omg...
studios ?!?!?! and i thought i was being an annoying bastard... lmao...
