... is american tv in disarray? it seems there's only half a dozen good shows...
tops. i watch house, lost, the office, my name is earl, e.r., and entourage.
family guy and south park have gone into the shits, and don't even get me
started on the simpsons. that show should've been canceled years ago, imho.
anyway, it seems there are too many wacky cop dramas, like 24 (sorry 24 lovers).
i mean, there are about a dozen csis, for crying out loud! now, it looks like
the big three are going back to crappy, half-ass reality shows, like "are you
smarter than... who gives a fuck?" (:p) and "thank god you're here," featuring a
bunch of washed up celebs doing... what's that show even about, again?

anyway, that's about all i have to say on american tv. now, can we please get
some more caps of over-the-seas shows like "top gear" and "the chaser's war on
everything?"

oh my, this is sad. you are pathetic. blaming it on women?

anyway, check your facts before you talk about things you don't know. the
president of cbs is not a female. it's a male. les moonves. les for leslie,
and he is not a woman.

and i'm not even american, so i won't start arguing here.
but i'll say that i am a female, and i liked and perfectly understood smith.

sg-1 also got canceled by a woman. al gough and miles millar's aquaman show got
turned down by a woman when any man would've gave it the green light. i'm not
sexist - but its clear they don't know how to run tv networks.

you're not one of these people who likes rda are you and think the show was not
the same without him? because to be completely honest with you - ben browder was
superb and i really enjoyed the final 2 seasons with him, and season 8 was also
superb.

there is only one thing that drives american tv -- the advertising dollars. if
the viewership is small they can't charge as much for advertising. it is plain
and simple so stop blamming it on women. the longer a show runs the longer it
costs to produce (ex sg1) so its not always cost effective to keep it on the
air - no matter how many viewers the show has.

can i suggest to the admins that they delete this topic because this has the
potential to get real ugly, real fast and last for days.

that said, this could get seriously entertaining!

can i just make a point of i know this? the argument in the case of sg-1 was
that they canceled it. they didn't say "right - we'll give you 20 more episodes
to conclude everything" - they just canceled it. that is pointless and a lot of
networks would have still given it that eleventh season. the ratings weren't
terrible, and the it was a long running show - most networks for those reasons
would give it one more. was just rediculous of sci fi to kill it without giving
them the chance to wrap the storylines. long running show deserves more respect
from a network.

and admins can delete this if they want, no problem. i'm not trying to be sexist
- just saying that they cannot judge action shows as well as a male executive would.

the plain fact is that a tv executive looks at the numbers. if the numbers are
not great then they cancel the show. if the numbers say that it costs more to
produce a show then what it earns.. they cancel it. plain and simple. its not
about emotion its about money.

they are producing sg1 movies in order to close the loop for the fans. they
did this with other show (example farscape and serenity) and it worked out well
for both sides. and as a fan of sg1 since its beginning -- although i am sad
to see it go i understand. they have already started repeating their
storylines and there was just no where to go with this.

from an article i read in usa today smith was cancelled by either the president
of the company or the person in charge of programming the article mentioned it
was a woman. perhaps usa today is wrong, im glad you enjoyed smith. yes, i
indeed have issues with women perhaps it's the way the majority act in the usa?
really not that important since it's only my opinion.

mgm are making the sg-1 dvd movies after sci fi just canceled it and left it to
die. sci fi had no intentions of doing anything more with the show, and mgm and
the sg-1 producers were battling for a renewal deal until mgm just said "screw
it" and gave them the movies.

as for farscape - again, sci fi weren't going to conclude it and just leave it.
the producers of farscape had to battle sci fi for the peacekeeper wars
mini-series. it wasn't given - it had to be fought for.

as for serenity - that was another studio (universal) that did that, not 20th c.
20th c had left that to die as well.

and i know its the numbers - please stop treating me like i don't know these
things because i do. but what i'm trying to say is that sg-1 was still getting
decent ratings, and it was a long-running show. it deserved the respect of an
eleventh season to wrap it up. instead they're having to rush the ori storyline
to a close in a 2-hour movie, whereas a 20-episode season would have been the
ideal amount of time for an effective and believable ending.

basically, the ratings weren't bad so an eleventh season would not have been
that bad of a gamble. they just saw 5 episodes of lower-than-normal ratings as a
reason to cancel it and not look as though they were trying to get rid of it.

anything that gets canceled on sci fi results in a battle to wrap storylines.
long-running shows get shit on by that network.

wow, this is a loaded issue!

sci-fi does cut off shows unfairly, they always have. at least there will be a
3rd stargate series called stargate universe!
even though sg-1 was repeating some storylines and loosing its edge, sci-fi
should have let them wrap it up nicely, imo! it's too bad another network is not
allowed to pick the series up.

and yes t.v. is becoming bloated with reality tv shows and crap shows, though
i'm not sure its just american tv that is doing this - it seems to be world
wide. sure there are the few exceptions that are good such as heroes, dr. who,
prison break etc. (sorry, but 24 is just right wing pro torture propaganda) but
it seems that the good shows lately are coming out of hbo and showtime etc.

anyhoo, women or man, makes no difference. the business is run by advertisers.

it's sad really ... product placement is becoming more and more blatantly
obvious. what a disgrace to tv! ever hear of subtle product placement! not whole
movies and series based around a certain product, such as a car - or the geico
cavemen (though those commercials are funny)

just my .02 cents!

1 - lost <new, fresh, but audience numbers are a bit low
2 - 24 <getting pretty tired
3 - jericho <lame
4 - battlestar galactica <getting a bit sad as noted by many, expected to pick
up though next season
5 - the sopranos <good if long in the tooth
6 - the shield <no thanks
7 - dexter <psych killer who is the hero? too sick
8 - heroes <very good, fresh, brilliant although so far has not lived up to
it's name. (they only save each other)
9 - prison break <much the same feeling as 24
10 - nip tuck <it's a night time soap
11 - one tree hill <never seen it
12 - how i met your mother <good, but the name should be 'things unrelated to
how i met your mother'
13 - desperate housewives <desperate housewives probably enjoy it, not i
14 - weeds <maybe if i was stoned i'd enjoy it?
15 - the closer <and her accent and personality isn't annoying at all!
16 - eureka <ok but pretty cheesy
17 - rescue me <not a fan
18 - entourage <not a fan
19 - dirt <not a fan

my additions:

20 - dead zone <was good many seasons ago
21 - smallville <silly but perfectly entertaining
22 - greys anatomy <ditto
23 - supernatural <ditto
24 - scrubs <ditto
25 - family guy <ditto
26 - boston legal <ditto
27 - reno911 <ditto
28 - house <very good
29 - medium <very good
30 - raines <very good, they had better not cancel it!
31 - my name is earl <good, but i can't get over how much lee has gone down in
my estimation since i learnt he was a scientologist, he could worship mold and
i'd be ok with it but scientology?
32 - the riches <ok
33 - atlantis <good, it's no sg-1 but still
34 - mythbusters <good
35 - shark <pretty good
36 - october road <very good, wonderful, kidding! (f'ing painful to watch the
ineptitude)

so there are still plenty of good shows, still if i were to list good shows
canceled before their time it would be a long list with many awesome shows.
they are ending shows too soon and imo they will pay and are paying, people just
aren't tuning in the same.
