okay, i'm going to risk being yelled at and ridiculed and ask the following
question: why is it that my download speed never, regardless of the show, goes
faster than 70kb? it usually sticks to about 40 at the most and, often, it
stays at 20. i've tried tinkering with the speeds manually, but it never really
works. someone once suggested that i increase the upload and decrease the
download and, although that seemed counter-intuitive to me, i tried it, but it
never worked. i know i'm misunderstanding something here.

what speed should you be able to download at?

back when i was on a 1.5mb/128kb connection i always found it better to limit my
upload speed to 7.5kbs whilst downloading, once complete i would reset to
unlimited and leave on all night.

hi,
i have a mac and use azureus and i had the same problem at first. i generally
recommend setting a limit on your upload speed, at least while downloading, the
info on that is in the help wiki, for reference i have a 3mb connection (when it
wants to work) and i have my upload speed set to 51kb/s. also you want to check
out the info on port forwarding. basically a scan through the help wiki, it help
me get straight, you get to it by clicking faq under help. i can\'t seem to post
the url.

find out your max upload speed cap it to 70-80% of that value. this
lets you download faster.

why? because your other 20-30 % are being sent as piece requests and
acknowledgments to the peers to whom you are connected to.

ex:

my max is 110 kb/s upload
i limit my global upload to 80 kb/s to get the max download i can get.

using utorrent 1.6.1
you can find your speed at: http://www.dslreports.com/stest

also - most isp's are getting into the habit of throttling traffic based on
ports. since azureus is preconfigured to run on 6881-6889, those are the most
commonly monitored and crippled bandwidth ports. change your port settings in
the preferences to some number above 50000 (most in this range are already
unused) - you may see a performance increase. also make sure you poke that same
hole in your firewalls.
