thanks - i don't really mind about the burning - nor does the dvd player need
any bells and whistles. it will only be for watching stuff i download rather
then genuine dvd's for that. i've got a pukka cambridge audio dvd player for
that.

amazon seem to have a few but would just prefer a recommendation for a good
divx/xvid player rather than guessing.

i have the philips dvp5960 and it's great for playing divx/xvid standard res
files. (despite having an hdmi port, it doesn't play any type of hd file but
will upconvert to 1080i) has a usb port so you can use a memory stick or some
usb hard drives to play avi/mp3/jpgs without burning dvds. biggest beef i have
is the short file name display (first 11 characters only) in the disc menu, so
you have to be careful with filenames. tip: when burning, use udf only mode.
imgburn is a great tool for this!

ok thankyou for that - so long story shory the philips should do the job. i'm
only interested in the standard res files.

one more thing - one burning the avi files to the disc do you just burn them
directly or do you create a folder on the disc; ie one folder of desparate
housewives and another fodler of 24 - or do you just burn them in one list ?

thanks for the help

i have a dvp 5140, it's pretty nice, even has a region code backdoor hack.
heh. when you fast forward too fast sometimes it becomes out of sync, but you
can pause it or restart it and it's fine. you can burn it in a folder or not,
however you want to do it. it's not the same model but i'm sure they don't
have too many changes

the philips dvp5960 will definitely do the job and more. aside from playing
divx, it is easy to hack for region free play.

/instructions for region hack:

1. turn on the unit
2. open the loading tray
3. press the "setup" button on the remote
4. navigate to the "preferences" page using the right arrow key
5. enter 138931
6. you will now see the current region code displayed
7. use the up/down arrow keys to select the region required or "0" for all regions
8. press the "setup" button on the remote
9. press "ok" on the remote

the usb hard drive support is a bit hit or miss... has to be fat not ntfs, and
externally powered if of any size. i have a 3 or 4 year old speedzter 5
enclosure with a maxtor 60gb ide (works most of the time, a bit finicky, have to
turn on the drive prior to the dvd player. but then it's like that on the pc too..)

i now just use my computer with the monitor as my tv, i use a remote desktop
program to control the desktop with my laptop like a remote. not the most
ideal setup but it didn't cost me any extra.

just buy an xbox. put a mod chip and a larger hard drive in it and go to xbox-
scene.com and find your way to obtaining xbox media center program. makes
watching all kinds of files a cinch on a tv.
