created by multi-award winning writer andrew davies, mr selfridge tells the story of 'mile a minute
harry', a man with a mission to make shopping as thrilling as sex. pioneering and reckless, with an
almost manic energy, he created a theatre of retail where any topic or trend that was new, exciting,
entertaining - or sometimes just eccentric - was showcased.

jeremy piven takes on the role as mr selfridge following a successful eight-season run on hit drama
entourage, in which he won three emmys and a golden globe for his portrayal as ari gold. joining
piven is katherine kelly (coronation street) as the confident and alluring socialite lady mae, whose
connections prove vital for harry as he builds his empire.

the drama is set in london in 1909, at a time when women were revelling in a new sense of freedom

looks to have nice production values at least, but i'm not sure if i trust the trailer to give me a sense of
how much of this is focused on comedy. is humor the aim for all of it (eg, life's too short & louie), the
dominant component (eg, sex and the city & lost girl), or just a recurring element (eg, true blood & wild
boys)? i'd probably put entourage between sex & the city and true blood fwiw.
ps: to any brits- is selfridges a chain like saks or a single store like bergdorf?

what's up with all the doubles atm.? it seems almost identical to "the paradise".

not as rough in other situations, but there's been quite a lot of rather similar shows airing lately, or at least
it seems a little bit worse than previously. with copper vs. ripper street, longmire vs. vegas, borgia vs.
the borgias and so forth. with parades end, magic city, the hour, boardwalk empire, downton abbey and
mad men on top that's quite a lot of historical shows recently.

but there must be an explanation behind two such similar shows as mr. selfridge and the paradise airing
so close to each other, or at least within the same year, with almost exactly the same plot and story. hm.
