there won't be a third season of starz's drama boss starring kelsey grammer and created by farhad
safinia. however, there are discussions between the pay cable network and boss producer lionsgate
tv about possibly doing a two-hour movie that would wrap up the story of chicago mayor tom kane,
played by grammer. "after much deliberation, we have made the difficult decision to not proceed with
(a third season of) boss," said starz in a statement tuesday. "we remain proud of this award-winning
show, its exceptional cast and writers, and are grateful to kelsey grammer, farhad safinia and our
partners at lionsgate tv."

ratings-wise, boss was soft but relatively steady. the series premiered to 659,000 viewers in october
2011. season 2, which was ordered before boss' series debut, opened with 317,000 viewers this past
august, down 52% from season 1, but subsequently recovered. it averaged 937,000 viewers over its
weekend premiere airings on the starz flagship channel and around 2.4 million across all platforms per
episode. that was down slightly from season 1 (1.1 million, 3 million). but boss brought cachet to
starz, earning critical praise and delivering the first major awards nominations for the pay cable
network, winning a golden globe for star grammer. additionally, the show developed strong following
by a small but devoted fan base. its ratings performance was probably hampered by the fact it didn't
have a strong lead-in as starz doesn't have enough original series to go around, and that it aired on
low-trafficked friday night. (though the network puts emphasis on a series' cumed weekend
viewership). going into season 2, the show beefed up the cast with new additions sanaa lathan,
jonathan groff and t.i. while keeping its status as one of the less expensive starz series. however,
unlike magic city, whose first season did only marginally better than season 1 of boss, the grammer-
starring drama was not owned by starz, with lionsgate tv controlling international and dvd rights.

after season 1, boss also brought in dee johnson as showrunner. since boss wrapped production on
season 2, johnson moved to take the reins of abc's freshman soap nashville but remained in first
position to boss. she will now be available to continue on nashville, which recently received a back-nine
order. boss was executive produced by safinia, grammer, gus van sant (who directed the pilot in his
series debut), johnson, brian sher and stella bulochnikov.

with boss' cancellation, spartacus now is the only starz original series so far to go beyond two
seasons. if a boss movie becomes a reality - which is tricky as it involves new deals with the cast and
crew - it would bring the show's run to 20 hours.

i like grammer so i gave it a shot, but i couldn't get passed the third episode: it was just so slow.
honestly i'm surprised it made it to a second season. everyone wants to create the next great political
show and be the next west wing. this, political animals... political shows are hard enough in a country
where most people don't care about the real government and are unhappy with it it. but the public really
doesn't want to see more politics during an election year where they are inundated with campaign ads and
campaign calls. it just leaves a sour taste for all things politics making an unwelcoming environment for
'entertainment politics'.

boss was a well written intelligent show therefore a high caliber production with a fantastic cast
and wonderful acting i couldn't get enough of it but unfortunately it didn't suit the majority of
nose picking morons who would rather stick to jersey shore or some other moronic brain debilitating
shit that spews out our tv screens these days...oh well.

uh...what?..."cumed"?

lol. sorry, i didnt write the article, and apparently didn't read it thoroughly before posting, i just
copied/pasted from deadline.com as is.

wiki says...
cume: in the practice of measuring the size of us commercial broadcasting and newspaper audiences,
cume, short for "cumulative audience," is a measure of the total number of unique consumers over a
specified period.

dictionary.com...
cumulative/accumulated audience: the number of people reached by an advertising or broadcasting
medium over a specified period of time: the station has a weekly cume of 5.5 million.

i'm with capt stupendis on this one. one hell of a great written show to see the mayor go through
what he had to and come back again was just great stuff. i really do hope they do a 2hr movie to
finish this off. it's shows like these that make me want to watch tv. yes they are expensive to make
but you can't beat a good drama.

this is so true. i can't believe they canceled boss but they decided to keep spartacus going with
andy whitfield's pitiful replacement.

hi
ref: the boss -
just like many good tv shows, you should wait until it filters around the world for opinions and
ratings (eg the walking dead, sons of anarchy which are a huge success) before you give a show
the axe. i am in australia, and everyone i have given this show can not believe it was given the
flick and have enjoyed the show very much.. be patient..and give shows a chance. the competition
for ratings are tough but it may take a year or 2 for people to actually view the show.

for the decision makers, the issue is not whether a show is liked or not liked. this show had high
ratings, and viewership numbers. ratings, how well a show is liked, is only one of many factor in
determining whether or not a show is canceled or renewed. it all comes down to one thing,
profitability/profit margin. this is why a shit show with the correct profit margin is kept alive,
while other much better shows with great ratings but high operating cost and lower profit margin
are canceled. it's never just about whether a particular show is well liked...unfortunately.
