sorry, dragonsal, the issue you are experiencing is out of eztv's hands.
this seems to happen most often with the scene release group "fov".
eztv has no communication wtih fov or other scene release groups.
you may want to look for releases by other groups....or convert the files before
playing them on your tv media player.

eztv does not cap (record) tv shows and has no control over what shows are chosen by the scene,
the container (file format), the video resolution (sd or 720p), or the season/episode numbering
scheme, etc.. these are all functions of the scene, not eztv. what eztv does do...is... post links to
torrents of scene releases.

i have the same problem with eps 2 & 3 (but not 1). i had a theory last week that it didn't play on my
telly because the vertical resolution wasn't divisible by 4. ep3, however was the same resolution as ep1
so that theory goes out the window.

anyway, here's what ffmpeg tells me about the two vids (eps 1 & 3):

input #0, mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2, from 'downton.abbey.s03e01.hdtv.x264-tla.mp4':

as far as my untrained eye can tell, the difference (apart from ep3 being encoded at a slightly higher
rate) is the video compatibility: isommp423gp5 (works) vs isomiso2avc1mp41 (doesn't). i really
appreciate the smaller mp4 files but am having to search for the xvids now. :-(

i believe it has to do with the audio encoding method they are using.
the issue went away for a while and now its back.
we can only hope that they fix it again.
like i said before, eztv has no communication with the scene.
