can anyone suggest a good media player, apart from wmp(wich is giving me the
irrits atm) or winamp that can organise my extensive tv collection, and sort
them using auto playlists ie. by playcount etc

i use videolan vlc media player. it is a freeware downloadable from
http://www.videolan.org/vlc (substitute xx with tt).

the source code is available to view on the site, and the program contains no
adware, spyware, or viruses.

the program is available as a config file or as a downloadable .exe. it also
contains many functions such as playlists.

this video playing app will play almost any video format known to man, and you
need not worry about codecs as the program does not(usually) need them.

hope that helps

regards, bpk

you can try the freeware media player classic based on the wmp 6.4 gui .. i
get the same errors as you get when i try wmp11 .. but i just drag the avi
into mpc and it always plays.

are you sure you have installed the xvid codec, if you have then wmp 11, winamp
will play the files fine, i have had no problems with either software, for the
more high end releases hr-hdtv and 720p you will have to use vlc as it is the
only player i have used that has been able to handle the extra processing that
is required, wmp 11 and winamp will both bottom out with the high end ones.

also installing a auxlieray mp3 decoder can help with the audio side, i have
fhg-radium codec installed to help with the audio side, had no problems what so
ever playing anything. with these codecs installed.

thanks for all ya help, vlc is good, but no auto-playlist, still to try the
other recomendations, i mean there is no problem playing the video at all, just
the fact it takes longer to play coz its searching for a codec, i have xvid ac3
codecs ect but still, "error dl codec"

haha

i just hate the "look" of wmp its friggen ugly lol, im big on customising
desktops, and it just does not fit in ☹️

media player classic. i've been using it for years, and i've been able to play
virtually all media files on it.

i can second this 100%, been using mpc for years now, with never any problems,
and its very simple looking good interface, i've tried other media players, for
me, nothing contends with it; kinda the same as nothing competes with winamp for
my music =p

i think ill stick wid vlc. its good basic and as most of u have said plays
anything, guess ill just have to do without my auto-playlisting, was handy but
not a necessity *spelling ☹️

cheers all

you know you can disable the automatic coded downloading thingy right?

tools -> options
in the player tab, disable "download codecs automatically"
