in the context of the conversation though it applies. krypto was pointing out that it is not only the united
states that creates cop shows, even ones played in the us itself. (though he does incorrectly attribute
continuum to being a show in the states, otherwise he is correct).
just because you can't tell the difference does not mean there isn't one.
~also, if i am going to be lumped in with another country, i am happy it is our neighbors to the north.

i think i speak for all non-americans when i say we can't tell the difference between an american and a
canadian, so stop pretending there is one.

you do not. different style, different setting, different accent. some or all of those differences may be
gradually eroding, but they aren't gone yet.

apparently, quite a few americans can't tell the difference between scottish and irish or even south
african and australian. hard to fathom, but there you are.

people who advertize their lack of perceptivity somewhat flummox me.

i'm not going to give this a try, i had it with cop shows procedurals
so the
only cop shows out there for
me are:

-continuum (because its more science-fiction than a cop show)
-midsomer murders (because its awesome)
-southland (because its not about all the procedural bs).

"cool story bro"

god you're an idiot. cool story bro is so old and lame now, you may as well be saying talk to the hand.

i would like to point out that while, yes, quite a few of us in the states are.. limited in their perception
and understanding of other cultures.. a majority of those of us on this board watch shows from other
countries (england and canada mostly), which does broaden our horizons a bit more than the average.
many of us can even tell the difference between people from individual major metropolitan areas within a
country. someone from manchester would have a completely different accent and attitude than someone
from london and they are are only 200 miles away (315 km). its amazing to us because the size of the
entirety of england is roughly equivalent to the drive from las vegas to los angeles (which is its nearest
metropolitan neighbor), and there is absolutely no accent difference between the two cities.

african and new zealand accents.

flummoxed.

i think i will be the only one staying on topic here...

this is a great show. the actors are geniously putting down the story and their characters. this isn't one of
those standard cop shows, this one goes a lot deeper into "the brain" of the victim/murderer wich makes it
more interesting to watch.

plus i love the goofiness of the main character

the reason is simply lack of history, i'd think. for the kind of regionalization to develop which one finds
in the old world, it takes a number of generations with little in the way of mingling and migration. most of
the area of the united states were settled only shortly before, or in some cases even after, the advent
of mass transportation (trains) and mass media (radio), which all but spelled an end to those sorts of
conditions.

the original colonies have had (just) enough time for similar peculiarities to emerge, though, i think?
couldn't you tell the difference in accent between, say, a bostonian and someone from 200 miles farther
south? i don't have a good sense of scale of that region, so i'm not sure what city that'd be...

on the other hand, of course, there's probably more variation within cities today than ever before.
communities used to be fairly monolithic, except for gradations in social standing. now, the very same
factors that prevent regionalization mean that there will be a range of incompletely assimilated ethnic
groups, many of which will develop accents of their own.

the more things change, the more they stay the same?

i can't honestly say i've ever consciously listened to a kiwi accent, so wouldn't really know what to look
out for to identify one. but south african and australian have very different vowel colourations, as far as
i'm able to discern.

this isn't a police procedural-- anything but. if you haven't watched it, why do you think you're
qualified to comment on it? o_0
