i found the pace interesting, the grounding in real news events refreshing and the acting believeable -
but will they be able to keep up the pace? - 8 out of 10 as far as i'm concerned.
i rather enjoyed it, some of the dialogue was a bit iffy, but kept a good flow and fast pace.
(though i did have a flash back to "drop the dead donkey" a couple of times)
have to say i really enjoyed this opening episode. i am a big sorkin fan anyway, i even loved studio 60
for all its flaws.
i loved the opening scene, hadn't seen it yet although apparently it was in their trailer which of course
being in thailand i don't get. i'm really looking forward to how they tackle other big issues of the past
year.
the opening scene was a bit cringe worthy and preachy and then went straight downhill after that - my god
it sucked!.
please understand, all those 'liberal values' that are being preached in this show i pretty much agree with
all that - this was horrible, unrealistic, and stoooooopid.
maybe it will save itself in later episodes - but me and the wife could not survive past 40 mins. the
lecturing tone of it! my god! who writes this shit? have they no shame??
i liked this opening episode. a fast pace can get monotonous, but it didn't. the dialogue and story
flowed well, without being overly predictable. the show may very well turn out to be a future
favourite of mine.
obviously, there's a reason why the american news media are in the disgusting state that they're in.
they deliver what a large number of people want, whether it's a deliberate preference, stupidity, or
because they can't help themselves. people justifying their "news" consumption habits will attack
this show. it always feels personal when one's own irrationality is pointed out.
the fact is that it's virtually impossible to say anything intelligent about the state of american
news media, without sounding like you're lecturing idiots. when half the media are encouraging
stupidity, and the other half is trying to avoid insulting the stupid, anyone saying anything
sensible in the middle of that will seem like an arrogant prick.
if this show doesn't get killed by this state of affairs, then maybe it can help improve it. at the
very least, it can't hurt, and in the meantime it's a relief to find something both american, sane
and news related on tv. of course, finding oneself relying on scripted drama for sensible news
programming, delayed by more than a year, isn't exactly uniformly grounds for optimism...
as for the opening scene: the fact that you can find it above academic question that the us is the
"best country in the world", and still get into a decent college, is a bad sign. it may mean that
the us is surpassing nazi germany in irrational self-glorification, or that the average us college
applicant now suffers an iq below what you'd expect in a random baboon troupe. either way, it's not
good. from an international point of view, the scene seemed understated, if anything.
anyway, high hopes for this show. let's hope that doesn't simply mean that disappointment is coming.
i've been watching my studio 60 dvd set to stave off my sorkin withdrawal. i didn't even know he had
something in the works! i only found out because i saw that the colbert report on my dvr said aaron
sorkin was a guest. i had to find out through stephen colbert!!!
i honestly feel like i'm in love again! it's like 75% of my country isn't suffering from over 100
i thought this was excellent. not sure where all the headbutting a brick wall stuff is coming from. i'm
eagerly awaiting the third episode.
a good drama should address issues in an entertaining way, and the issue this appears to be addressing
is the complete dearth of fact-based non-hyperbolic news reporting in the modern world and the fact that
journalists have a responsibility to provide it. you can't have democracy without being informed, and this
is trying to shine a light on those in the media who would prefer thinly veiled partisan propaganda to the
far more important responsibility of reporting the news and then letting the electorate make up their own
minds.
of course, if you prefer that your tv does your thinking for you, you'll probably find this show
objectionable.
9/10 from me so far.
