i was idly curious as to why this is scene-titled "scandal.us", since a "us" suffix usually indicates a
remake of a british or, more rarely, otherwise foreign series. that doesn't seem to be the case here, so
i'm thinking it's likely to be a coincidental match with an unrelated earlier production. and, after going
through a couple of pages of releases, i came across these, which do look like good candidates
(http://orlydb.com/3?q=scandal):

2005-11-08 04:13:58 tv scandal.s01e01.ws.pdtv.xvid-remax

my curiosity is still unsatisfied, though, because i can't figure out what series those are releases of.
there is one imdb result which fits both the title and the year, but that one has hundreds of episodes
(the genre is given as "drama", so i'm thinking daily soap), not just seven, and seems way too obscure
for a major uk-tv release group - which is what remax seems to have been, going by their release
listings - to bother with: http://imdb.com/title/tt0473428

anyway, that's as far as my investigation progressed, and i'm out of ideas as to where to go from here,
at least for the time being. i naturally tried simply sticking one of the release tags into google, but zero
joy. any help appreciated! 🙂

howdy kassyopeia,

i was curious too...

yup, there was a tv series in south africa titled "scandal" wich premiered in january 2005 on etv.
http://www.tvrage.com/scandal_za

although the 2005 series does not appear to have ever been capped and distrubuted, and therefore
would not pose a file naming conflict, it does shares the exact same "show title" as the new series,
hence, the us suffix.

as for the two episodes you found e01 & e07 with dates that are seven weeks apart...maybe the etv
series aired just once per week during season one and in season two became a daily/weekday show.

looks like it's still airing...sporadically.
http://www.etv.co.za/soapies/index/scandal_

soooo confusing. i've got a headache now...thanks kassyopeia. lol.

aha, you are right:

✎ Quote by the sd x264 tv releasing standards 2012

different shows that have the same title in different countries (e.g.
the marriage ref) must have the iso 3166-1 alpha 2 country code in the
directory name, except for uk shows (e.g. the.marriage.ref.uk not
the.marriage.ref.gb). iso country code is not needed for the original
show (e.g. the.marriage.ref.us is forbidden).

different shows with the same name in the same country produced in
different years must have the year of the first season in the directory
name, e.g. human.target.2010 and doctor.who.2005. year is not needed
for the first show with a particular name.

i'd assumed the criterion was that a series of the same name had actually been scene-released, not
that such a series merely existed. but the rules clearly support your interpretation.

alrighty, that means that my initial question (which specific series the "us" tag was intended to
distinguish this one from) didn't make any sense in the first place - it's a general disambiguation with
respect to all earlier foreign titles, period.

as to what those seven remax releases (i only gave the details for the first and the last because the
others didn't contribute any additional information) referred to, all it took to figure that out now was the
better understanding you provided and a fresh mind. 🙂 first, i re-checked each of the other imdb hits
(http://imdb.com/search/title?title=scandal&title_type=tv_series) , but they unsurprisingly still don't fit -
and i'm pretty sure at least one of them is a junk entry anyway, which should be merged into the etv
series. then, remembering that remax seemed to be a uk-based group, i tried the british film
institute's film & tv database (http://ftvdb.bfi.org.uk) . you may want to add that one to your list of
research resources, they occasionally have information on uk-tv productions that doesn't seem to be
available anywhere else on the web... not in this case, though.

finally, i tried a simple google search for |scandal "tv series" uk 2005|. the first relevant hit is at
sharetv.org (http://sharetv.org/shows/scandal_uk) , and is complete rubbish - most of it blank, and i'm
pretty sure the few bits of information that are present belong to the etv soap. crikey. the second
relevant hit is at tvrage.com (http://tvrage.com/scandal_uk/episode_list) , and is the clear winner:
✎ Quote
scandal (uk)
classification: documentary
status: canceled/ended
network: bbc two ( united kingdom)
airs: wednesdays at 08:50 pm
runtime: 30 minutes
premiere: november, 2005
ended: december, 2005

gotta say that i've never seen imdb quite that decisively beaten. impressive.

ps: the third relevant hit is, amusingly, this thread. 🙂

the synopsis of this series sounds really familiar to a film i saw some years back called inside man
directed by spike lee starring denzel washington, clive owen, willem dafoe, jodie foster, chiwetel
ejiofor and christopher plummer.

you rock, kassyopeia, i just added the british film institute's film & tv database
(http://ftvdb.bfi.org.uk ) to my list. thank you.

doh! fresh eyes/mind indeed. when i first searched tvrage for scandal i didn't notice the uk show that
was further down the list. yup, that's a match.
