austrian director michael glawogger travels to five countries to focus on some of the worst jobs
imaginable: ukrainian miners crawl into tiny cracks in old coal pits to scratch out a few bags of winter
fuel; indonesian workers trudge long distances carrying baskets with hundreds of pounds of sulfur
chunks extracted from a steaming mountain; pakistanis risk explosions and burial under tons of scrap
iron as they dismantle huge carrier ships.
the visuals are everything here. despite the hardships depicted, many sequences have a dreamlike
beauty. in addition, the director has a bone-dry sense of irony; during the ukraine scenes, he
frequently cuts away to a statue of stakhanov, the "hero" lauded by the soviets for his superhuman
work habits. he also shows us an old german smelting works that's been converted into a theme park.

an unflinching portrait of physical work in the 21st century, 'heroes' looks at illegal miners in ukraine
who spend long days crawling through cramped shafts of exhausted coal mines to dig out a living for
themselves.
part 2: ghosts (sulfur carriers in ijen, indonesia)
in this episode visit east java in indonesia where men climb steep paths amid pungent vapors to bring
back lumps of sulfur from the mouth of a volcano.
part 3: lions (butchers in an open-air market in port harcourt, nigeria)
a glimpse inside the bloody and frenetic activity of the port harcourt meat market in nigeria.
part 4: brothers (welders in the gadani ship-breaking yard, pakistan)
pakistani men use little more than their bare hands and acetylene torches to dismantle an abandoned
oil tanker for scrap metal.
part 5: the future (steel workers in liaoning, china)
steel workers toil at ancient blast furnaces trying desperately to honor their national heritage.
part 6: epilogue (youths in landschaftspark, duisburg-nord, germany)
an old steel factory turned into an amusement park where teenagers make out on the spot where men
once fell to their deaths.
