yeah i don't mind mp4 but prefer avi for some things and mkv for others...

there are several major groups not party to the x264 rules, and they don't supersede the xvid rules,
it states the rules are seperate. i don't think xvid will be disappearing suddenly... it's just the
x264 seems to beat xvid to release as it encodes more quickly.

mp4 doesn't work in the 3 dvd players i tried.
this will be a pain to convert.

and in the mplayer osx software i usually use on my mac mp4 is it and miss as to whether it work so
i have to go to vlc which i don't like as much.

did they have to make this change mid-season? i burn these to disc using divx, which doesn't seem to
do well with x264! so, what is a good alternative free burning software?

buy a media player and simply watch from a usb/harddrive, most bluray players have this function also.
i'm glad not to use dvd's anymore.

@mechfishy i find image burn to be a good free app for burning discs. if you are looking for a decent
conversion app then i recommend handbrake. it is also free.
