in july 2010 it was announced that koco drama, a subsidiary of shed media would be producing a three part drama called
young james herriot for the bbc inspired by the true story of james herriot/james wight and how he learnt his trade in
scotland. this series will draw on archives and exclusive access to the diaries and case notes he kept during his student
days in glasgow, as well as the biography written by his son. the book to accompany the bbc series, young herriot, was
written by the historian and author john lewis-stempel. the first episode was shown on bbc1 on 18 dec 2011.

the plot is based on the early life and studies of veterinary surgeon james herriot, known for his work in bbc show all
creatures great and small. the idea for the programme came from herriot's adventures as a medical student. while the
plot centres around herriot, other topics come up like the subjugation of women, the treatment of students by professor
gunnell - one of the professors at the college, and the rise of the fascist movement in the uk.

this series was an absolute cracker, if it does not get a second series it will be a travesty, but i would
not be surprised with what the way the bbc is run these days. the series it self from great to superb and
everybody involved should be highly praised indeed. i would recommend it to anyone that enjoys a
rather good drama and watch it with a open mind.

whenever i hear that i need to maintain an "open mind" when watching a drama, it tells me that it's more
about pushing an agenda than telling a story.

i'm wondering about that myself. i liked the original series. in what way would i need an open mind to like
this one?

is it the ahistoricity of focusing on

the subjugation of women

during this period of history, or have they made 'young herriot' into a teen drama (which would be
annoying).

i watched all three in one sitting and wished there were more,
his books were favorite of my late father (who was a vet. as was his father before him and his two uncles)
reading his books and his life was my way of introduction to the country life - and seeing this drama, made
it come to life
wish there were more of his books and works dramatized as these were
