it seems the audio is heavily compressed, it is not such an issue on this show but i've noticed it more and
more recently and it makes walking dead unwatchable.

have you tried vlc player from videolan.org?
it's an excellent open source based player that plays almost everything and has a lot of options to
tweak it to your own liking.
i have used it for years and have no audio issues like you describe with the particular downloaded .avi
like you seem to have.
worth a try, i'd say.

what doesnt it play?
i know it cant play bluray discs but u can convert them in a few hours to mkv which plays nicely.
