i know there are plenty of smarties out there that can help. this is my issue.
i've had norton system works 2005 on my office pc and the 1 year subscription
has expired. i thought id uninstall it and reinstall it and it would ask me
for the key but when i reinstall it it just says that its still expired and
does not give me the option to enter in the key. i made sure all files in
program files are gone but there must be something somewhere in the computer
that makes it remember. anyone know if i need to clear out my cookies or
something else so it does not remember that it has been installed on this
computer already? (without having to reformat of course)

i'm a mac user and as you must know, no anti-virus is needed, but i do work for a tech company. cookies
are created by web sites and not programs. norton most likely creates a reg file so that it remembers
settings and such. you would need to find out what name norton uses for its reg file and then delete it.
to open your registry just go to start-run and type regedit.
do not delete anything in there until you are sure it's norton because those are the most important files
on your pc and removing the wrong ones could be worst than having to format!

good luck

mac guy - as you said, you're a mac guy. leave this one to me, k? (oh and there
are viruses for macs... )

the entire reason it doesnt work... is that his subscription expired.
reinstalling wont help as it was time based. you had nortons (horrible software)
for a year, and that year is up... so you have to buy another years
subscription. think like you would subscribe to a magazine, you had your years
worth, so pay for another year if you want it.

the point is i never did pay for it in the first place. it came from a torrent
site. i believe there is a way to make it so it does not know it was on the
computer. i'm sure if i reformatted the computer it would install just fine. i
know reinstalling it wont help thats why im here asking some of you jr.
hackers out there. the whole reg file makes sense. if i uninstalled system
works completly then when i reinstall it, how does it know the same experation
date? cause there is a file still somewhere in the computer to remember that
so someone does not just do what im trying to do each time it expires.

nevermind! i figured it out. funny how the mac guy knew more than the
one that acted all cocky. i found this website
h**p://www.askdavetaylor.com/how_can_i_fully_remove_norton_antivirus_from_my_sy
stem.html
and followed the instructions and its installed and got a new fresh year.
allllllright!

haha, i said i was a mac user,, not a guy! 😛
and yes there are viruses for mac's, i said no anti viruses is needed on a mac cuz the chances to get a
virus on one is less likely than winning the lottery...
but i only said i was a mac guy cuz i didn't know what would be the name norton would use in the reg
files, i do know pc's like the back of my hands, i've worked for a pc tech company or over 4 years now.
and it is possible to reinstall norton and get a fresh copy (like he already did so) you just need to know
what you're doing! 😉

called "trial reset" run thiis and it clears everything from registry so you
can start all over again...there is also a program out there called "norton
live update fix" apply that and you are set for about 50 years...just google
them im sure you will find it....good luck

curb

i know you're all rosolved now, but what you were probably thinking at the
start was to unhide the hidden folders:

double click c

"tools" from the menu bar

scroll down to "folder options"

click "view"

scroll down to "show hidden folders", click it.

once this is done you view the application data that was hidden and delete it
i.e

c:/documents & settings/all users/application data/folder for the program you
want to delete.

this filepath may vary depending on your computer setup

once this was done you would be able to do a clean install
