yeah, but its not encoded to hdtv resolution, and no 5.1 sound....
if it was the file would be around 700 megs

the point here is that they are encoded *from* an hdtv source. as opposed to
dsr.

even with like-for-like 350mb caps these ones look a hell of a lot better
than the original smeary washed out crap that sci-fi channel broadcasts.

so true about the quality, i was going to get the current third season rips,
but then i realised they were dsr i changed my mind.

it was worth waiting for the hdtv rips, the quality is just so much better.

here we have a quality-shift that makes much more sense than the 700mb releases 😉

read the friggin file description. pay attention to what is released. is that

apparently so. i look forward to reading the exact same moans when the new
version of s03e04 is released next week.

this might be a stupid question but is this as good as the s03e01e02 hr? and if
its not will a hr one be released?

no, the hr versions are twice the size, and often retain the original source
audio, which can be full 5.1 surround sound on some rips.

your typical 350mb rips end up being around 1000-1100kbs xvid video, and 110-
160kbs vbr mp3 audio, with a compressed vid size of around 624x352.

typical 700mb rips end up more like 2000kbs xvid video, usually source ac3
dolby 5.1 audio (depending on the ripper sometimes only 2 channel), with a
compressed vid size of around 960x528.


be aware though that neither is actually that close to true hdtv source, but
really most people would struggle to notice the difference with the hr versions.

to give a little perspective, 350mb rips are not actually that bad, if you go
looking at movie rips, many won't even break the 800kbs video mark, and lets be
honest, anything below 800 in xvid just kind of sucks.

my only gripe with 350 vs. 700 rips, is the audio, the current trend seems to
be all or nothing, ac3 audio is a big waste of space unless you 'really' want
5.1 dolby, and even then many 700 rips are not.
then you have the audio on 350 rips, which are hovering dangerously low at
around the 120kbs mp3 mark, i'd much rather see something averaging more in the
140kbs range...
