toast is the ultimate nostalgia trip through everything edible in sixties britain. based on the
heart-wrenching bitter-sweet story of renowned food writer and chef nigel slater's childhood, toast
is a delicious retrieval of the tastes and smells that a young boy associates with his journey into
adulthood.

nigel's stepmother will be played by helena bonham carter, with freddie highmore set to portray
slater as a 15-year-old boy.

the film is based on nigel slater's bestselling autobiographical novel and has been written by lee
hall.

tv review: toast by jeremy clay

with an obsequious bow which bends so low they practically headbutt their own knees, the new radio
times declares the looming royal wedding the tv event of the century.

yup, the century. quite a prediction, given the 90 years of telly yet to come.

if i shared their bombastic self-belief i might make an equally immoderate claim for toast (9pm,
bbc1), but let's just stick to calling it the last great drama of 2010.

in a week awash with period pieces, this exquisite adaptation of food writer nigel slater's vivid
memoir stood head and shoulders above the rest: poised, poignant, warm and wonderful, and as finely
crafted as a nest of spun sugar.

it opened with credits which merit a short review of their own: a beautifully-filmed,
handsomely-staged swoop along the shelves of a 1960s grocer's, where the names of the cast popped up
on vintage boxes of porridge and the like.

that set the tone. from the props department to the camera crew, this was a true labour of love.

which is more than can be said about the cheerless home life of the young nigel.

unheeded by his sickly mum, whose idea of cookery was to boil tins in a pan; scolded by his
distracted, distant, agitated dad (a masterly performance by ken stott), nigel seeks solace in food.

one night he's heard making small moans of pleasure in his room.

his father bursts in, spluttering with indignation, demanding he stop whatever it is he's doing.

he slams the door, and nigel goes back to his nocturnal pursuit: admiring a cookery magazine under
the blanket, by torchlight.

sj clarkson's film was dotted with delicious little sequences like that. and they came thick and
fast after the death of nigel's mother, when helena bonham carter appeared as the broken family's
new cleaner
