they use ac3 sound:

[audio info]
decoder - (0x2000) kmp audio codec(ac3(dolby digital)-liba52.dll)
format - major type: audio - sub type: pcm
waveformatex: pcm(0x1), 48000 hz, 16 bits, 2 ch

use vlc player or kmplayer, they are the best players you can get:

kmplayer: http://www.kmplayer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14938
vlc player: http://www.videolan.org/

i recommend kmplayer, it has more options and faster playback, such as when you go back/forward.

had noticed that from the beginning also, and had assumed that's how the show was actually being
presented. has anyone seen the 720 or 1080 "live" to know that's not the way the show actually
broadcasts? i'm assuming such a fine detail could be easily lost in the lower 480 resolution, so i'm not
sure comparison to the low-res will necessarily lead to a correct conclusion.

"exclusive: the walking dead set visit preview: oh yes, there will be blood!"

will-be-blood

"...showcases the gritty, dark look of the series, which is being shot on super 16mm film stock." so its
not even a faux film grain added in post; it's actually shot on mid-res film.

at least for me, when i said "from the beginning" i meant that it was something noticed even in episode
1. that the show is shot on 16mm film explains for me graininess i'm seeing here, and doesn't appear
new or different in episode 4. for what it's worth.

is the show original sound in 2 channels or is this downmixed by the rip process? i was hoping to get 5.1
sound, but only 2 channels in the file.
