well, you don't really need to watch any doctor who to enjoy torchwood. the two
shows are fairly unrelated, although there are some mentions of events from doc
who, and some things pertaining to jack that were revealed/set up in doctor who.
you want to start with season 27 of doctor who, also known as season 1 of the
new (2005-present) series. that is the season that jack is first introduced to
the doc who universe. season 28 (2006, aka new season 2) introduces the
torchwood institute in london, as well as the revamped cybermen (whom are a
classic doctor who villain). and various other things as well.
it's really up to you. by the end of season 1 of torchwood, everything that you
would have known about jack from watching doctor who they reveal anyways. it
really seems to make no difference to me.
as the above posters have said, there's a few episodes of doctor who which
mention torchwood and/or have captain jack in them. also, in the cybermen
episodes of doctor who, if i remember correctly, toshiko from torchwood is
there too playing the same character in both shows. what's more interesting
though, is the woman who's about to play the new assistant for season 3 was
there too but in a different character. it'll be interesting to see if that
ever gets explained (probably not).
jacks character is bi-sexual, this is explained in the new season 1 of dr.
who. he's from a period of time where the sexualtiy of an individual isn't as
clealy defined as the presant day. everybody basicly does what they want with
who they want.
so what's up with all the gay stuff in this series??
are they trying to make a statement?
i don't mind if they portrait a man or woman to be gay, but does it have to be
so explicit?
i'm dutch, so i'm not offended by it or anything like that, i was just wondering...
well, clearly you are offended by it, you don't seem to be complaining about the
straight sex on the show, which has been far more explicit than a couple of gay
kisses. hell, even the girl/girl stuff has been more explicit than the gay scenes.

it's not just jack though. if you look through the season, each of the five main
characters has has both at least one straight and one gay experience.
really nice imo. jack's too cool 🙂
i have every ep sitting here waiting to be watched, i watched the first 5 min
of the first ep and thought this could be good.
but now after seeing the posts it looks like it is a sex show? can someone
tell me if there is any sort of sci-fi in it at all?
otherwise i dont think i will watch, it sounds like rubbish.
cheers
it's not a sex show, although they have more sex-related scenes than your
regular sci-fi show. if you're offended easily, that's life. now... if they made
a porno version of star trek, that would be fun 🙂

no, really, i'm not offended by it. i have just never seen a show where in
almost every episode there's some kissing between two people of the same sexes.
the girl-girl stuff, i liked ;-) , but what do you find explicit about that?
i haven't seen any nudity except for gwen's boyfriend's ass which image is now
burned in my memory and impossible to erase... :-(
what i do find strange is that jack is brought back to 1941, a time were
homosexuality is not something you show or talk about and then jack kisses a
soldier (the real jack) in the middle of a room full of people.
well you had the girl-girl and straight pairings actually rolling around the
sheets. either showing some sort of foreplay, showing them afterwards in bed
together and the like.
any of the gay couplings were either only implied (owen in his menage-a-trois in
the first episode, jack and ianto) or only
kissing/dancing, as in the case of jack and well, jack.
regarding the reaction from the crowd at the dancing jacks, they seemed to be
too stunned to begin any trouble. you hear someone saying a "what are the doing"
or something along those lines.
also 1941-jack was a decorated hero, he commanded the respect of his fellow
soldiers.
